India, China, And Sri Lanka Are Connected In Targeted Oppression
Justice for All advocates through the Sri Lanka Task Force, Burma Task Force, Save Uyghur, Free Kashmir, and Save India from Fascism teams. Many sources of oppression are often linked to the same regimes or gain influence from them.
China is occupying East Turkestan and holding up to three million Uyghurs in concentration camps. The Chinese government has destroyed 16,000 mosques here. In occupied Kashmir, the Indian government has made it the most militarized region in the world with nearly 1 million soldiers. Since August 5, 2019 the Muslim majority region had its constitution ripped apart, total communication shutdowns, and forced lockdowns pre-pandemic. India’s BJP also created two policies when working together would create discriminatory citizenship rights for Muslims and other minorities. These are the NRC and CAA. Detention centers have been built in Assam, too. While both India and China have oppressed Muslims, Rohingya Muslims have been fleeing genocide in the Rakhine state of Burma as well. In August 2017, over 700,000 fled to neighboring Bangladesh to the refugee camp Cox’s Bazaar.
On October 5, President Rajapaksa met with Indian Foreign Secretary Harsh Shringla in Colombo and said that he would not permit Sri Lanka to be used in any way that may harm India’s security. This was in response to Sri Lanka’s economic ties to China, with the Belt and Road Initiative in particular. Rajapaksa told him not to worry about Sri Lanka’s relationship with China. The President told Shringla that India was also welcome to invest in his country.
The meeting came as China has been investing billions of dollars in infrastructure, such as the port of Hambantota. India may also be concerned about the planning of Sri Lanka’s off-shore Port City Colombo. This city would cost an initial $1.4 billion to start, and $15 billion more to complete.
Shringla has met with Tamil minority parties previously and India has asked Sri Lanka to protect the Tamils, and to maintain a multi-ethnic and multi-religious atmosphere. India under the ruling BJP party and Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been oppressing religious minorities such as Muslims on its own through policy, land occupation, propaganda, and lynchings.
