Save Uyghur Campaign Applauds US, UK, EU Sanctions on China Over Uyghur Genocide
On March 22nd, 2021, the United States, United Kingdom, and Canada joined the European Union in sanctioning Chinese officials and entities involved in the genocidal campaign of Chinese government on Uyghurs and other Turkic-speaking ethnic nations such as Kazakhs and Kyrgiz in East Turkestan.
Save Uyghur Campaign of Justice For All commends this coordinated effort of new sanctions targeting the Chinese officials who are responsible for the crack down in East Turkestan under the name of “people’s war and terror.”
The names of Chinese officials targeted in these new sanctions are:
- Chen Mingguo, director of the Xinjiang Public Security Bureau (XPSB). The XPSB is responsible for carrying out the mass detentions, surveillance, and repression of the Uyghurs—forming the foundation that enables China’s genocidal campaign of the Uyghurs.
- Wang Junzheng, party secretary of the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps (XPCC). The XPCC is a Chinese Communist Party-controlled paramilitary organization in East Turkestan responsible for serious human rights abuses against Uyghurs.
- Wang Mingshan, Vice President of China and member of the Politburo Standing Committee, China’s highest decision-making body.
On the same day, in response to the new sanctions, China’s foreign ministry announced sanctions on 10 people and entities in Europe that “threatened China’s sovereignty and spread rumors and misinformation.”
Commenting on the newly-announced sanction, Serwi Huseyin, team lead of Save Uyghur, advocated, “While we applaud the joint sanctions on China’s officials who initiated this unprecedented level of oppression happening in East Turkestan, we urge countries around the globe to cut ties with forced Uyghur labor supply chains, deprive China of it’s privilege to host Olympics in 2022, and provide expedited immigration and refugee services for Uyghurs who are fleeing from Chinese persecution and genocide.”
