Save India: Islamophobia and the COVID Response In India is Not Acceptable
Apr. 06, 2020
India’s response to COVID-19 has been woefully inadequate. The fascist government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, resorted to unscientific responses which included banging steel plates, cow urine parties, without regard to the potential that India’s crowded conditions have for the unchecked spread of the novel Coronavirus SARSCoV2 (COVID-19). Finally, a 3-week lockdown was imposed on the country with a 4 hour notice. This left many stranded with no means to get back to their homes. Most transportation was also shut down. Migrant workers, who were left with no means for food or shelter, began a long walk back to their villages.
In all of this, instead of now coordinating a scientific investigation and mitigation process, the pro-government Indian media has begun a smear campaign against the minority Muslim community. Targeting the Muslim community as a cause of the virus is anti-Muslim, Islamophobic propaganda. We, at Justice For All, are concerned that all this is a planned polarization of the majority community in India to place the blame on Muslims, which will make it easier for the fascist BJP government to further marginalize the Muslim community.
Already struggling with the un-constitutional Citizenship Amendment Act, the community is being pressed from many directions. Muslims consider India their home, and yet, they feel that the India led by the Bharatiya Janata Party, the political arm of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, is purposefully marginalizing them, in order to create the Hindu-nation that has long been the goal of the RSS.
We thank Ambassador Brownback for his statement on tracking the situation against minorities in India and Afghanistan. We ask that the State Department make an urgent assessment of the situation, and call on the government of India to immediately stop the hate mongering via their controlled media outlets, and make full attempts to correct the situation.
COVID-19 has no religion, and does not discriminate based on it. It is to the benefit of the world that all countries put their collective scientific talents together, and cooperate in fighting this disease.
